Merck today reported a 59% drop in second-quarter profits, as the US pharmaceutical giant was hit by the withdrawal of its Vioxx arthritis drug and a big one-time tax charge on repatriated funds.
Ex-Merck scientist views on Vioxx changed
The former top scientist at Merck testified Monday that he initially concluded an internal study of Vioxx linked the drug to an increase in heart attacks and strokes less than a year after it was approved for sale.
